Fasting is an essential safety step to reduce the chance of the stomach being full of food during the anaesthetic. When the stomach is full there is a chance that it can enter the lungs if the patient vomits. This can be very dangerous.
Please do not take food, milk drinks, lollies, or chewing gum for 6 Hours before your anaesthetic.
Please drink clear fluids* up to 2 hours before your anaesthetic.
“Clear fluids" means you can read a newspaper through the fluid. They include water, cordial, and clear apple juice.
